- Congratulations: internship at the Landestheater Coburg for a student of the Detmold percussion class
Severin Stitzenberger has been Professor of Percussion at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold since 2026. Since 2018 he has played as Principal Percussionist of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, and since 2014 he has been a member of the ensemble Salaputia Brass.
He received his first percussion lessons from his father; later he studied with Uwe Eichele at the Jugendmusikschule Wangen. At the same time he attended the percussion school “Drummers Focus”. He won several awards at the “Jugend musiziert” competition and played in the Landesjugendorchester Baden-Württemberg and the Bundesjugendorchester.
After finishing school he did his military service with the Luftwaffenmusikkorps München. He then studied percussion at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München with Arnold F. Riedhammer and Peter Sadlo, and at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste with Klaus Schwärzler.
He gained his first orchestral experience during an internship at the Staatsoper Stuttgart. Engagements at the Oper Frankfurt and with the Augsburger Philharmoniker followed.

Gewandhausorchester Leipzig
Principal Percussionist since 1 August 2018.
The world-famous Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the oldest civic symphony orchestra in the world, plays today in three venues: it performs the Grosse Concerte at the Gewandhaus, accompanies opera and ballet at the Oper Leipzig, and performs Bach cantatas with the Thomanerchor in the Thomaskirche. Andris Nelsons is Gewandhauskapellmeister. With almost 300 performances a year, its programmes range from the great symphonic repertoire to chamber music and early music, and to festivals such as the Mendelssohn-Festtage. The orchestra also commissions new works, most recently the completion of fragments from Mendelssohn’s Sixth Symphony. It is known for a warm, dark and distinctive sound.

Salaputia Brass
Member of the brass ensemble since 2014.
Salaputia Brass is twelve musicians with trumpets, trombones, horn, tuba and percussion. They have played together since 2007, and each of their programmes follows one idea: familiar works stand beside discoveries, and between the pieces the musicians themselves guide the audience through the evening. They play every era in its own language; many works they arrange themselves, others are written for them. The musicians play in major German orchestras, mostly in principal positions, among them the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Salaputia Brass appears regularly at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival; their recordings are released by Berlin Classics.
The ensemble performs at international festivals and in renowned concert halls and works actively to expand the repertoire. Its programmes combine original compositions, arrangements and premieres of contemporary works.

Other projects
Alongside his regular ensembles, Severin Stitzenberger is heard again and again in changing chamber music projects, for example in Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion in Zurich, with the Boulez Ensemble in Berlin, in the tuba trio 21meter60, with the Christian Benning Percussion Group and at “Two Play To Play” with Pantha du Prince. At the Soundseed Festival in Leipzig he also played Bushra El-Turk’s solo concerto under the direction of Nabil Shehata.
Since the summer semester of 2026, Severin Stitzenberger has been Professor of Percussion at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. Previously he taught orchestral percussion at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Leipzig and the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden.
